“ON MEN, MASCULINITIES AND GENDER POWER RELATIONS: A TRANSVERSAL DIALOGUE WITH MYSELF”
Abstract
The notion of transversal dialogical (or poly-logical) thinking and practice has been taken up in various strands of feminist politics. In this spirit that I address, albeit briefly, a number of ongoing problematics that I have found to be important over the last twenty years or more, to me at least, in seeking to study and indeed change men, masculinities and gender relations critically. Thus, in this session, I focus on problematics around men, masculinities and changing unequal gender power relations; after all, it is very unlikely that greater gender equality will be achieved without both greater equality and rights for women, and changing men and masculinities away from persisting patriarchal ways and means. The question then is how is changing men and masculinities towards greater gender equality to be analyzed and enacted in policy, politics and everyday practice. Specifically, I engage here with some of the ongoing problematics that, over the years, I have found to be important for theory and practice: feminism and the man/men problem; the trouble with masculinities; naming and deconstructing men; the material-discursive; the hegemony of men rather than hegemonic masculinity; patriarchy, patriarchies, and trans(national)patriarchies; the growing politics of absence; the concept of gex; the abolition of ‘men’; and some future gender scenarios. These various problematics are both interconnected and in dialogue, even contradiction, with each other. They focus differentially on concepts, history and geography, and broad politico-theoretical concerns.

Jeff Hearn is Senior Professor, based in Gender Studies, Örebro University, Sweden; Research Professor in Sociology, University of Huddersfield, Professor Emeritus, Hanken School of Economics, Finland. He has published extensively on such questions as: gender, sexuality and violence; men’s violence against women and children; critical studies on men and masculinities; work, organisations and management; globalisation and transnationalisation; social policy; and social theory. He is managing co-editor of Routledge Advances in Feminist Studies and Intersectionality book series, and c-editor of Norma: the International Journal for Masculinity Studies.
